Ceratarges Spiny Trilobite

Product description

A spectacular Ceratarges Trilobite of the order Lichida, discovered in Oufatene, Morocco. It dates from the Devonian Period, 360 million years old.

The eyes are on long stalks, and it probably lay in the mud on the sea floor with just its eyes protruding in order to catch prey, and protect itself from possible predators.

The huge array of spines is typical of this species of trilobite.

They have been prepared over many painstaking hours, using the latest micro-abrasion techniques to develop the spines from the matrix.

Trilobites ("three-lobes") are extinct arthropods that form the class Trilobita. They appeared in the Middle Cambrian epoch and flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Late Devonian extinction, all trilobite orders, with the sole exception of Proetida, died out.
The last of the trilobites disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about 250 million years ago.

This is a magnificent addition to a collection, and is of exceptional quality.
